BEAT THE HEAT AT THE MONTGOMERY ZOO
The Summer Enrichment Program “Beat the Heat” is an opportunity to visit the Zoo and learn about how we care for our residents during the hot summer months. Since many of the zoo’s residents have fur or feathers, the animal care staff takes extra measures to ensure the animal’s health and well-being during the hot summer months.
Join us beginning at 10:00 a.m. on July 21, 2012, at the sloth bear exhibit where he will enjoy a summer cool down to help him “beat the heat”. Continue around to Monkey Island and watch the monkeys enjoy finding their “cool treats in hanging boxes”, then keep traveling on to see the maned wolves, jaguars and many more of the animals receiving their special treats. Be sure to stop and watch the antics of the chimp as they receive their treats, you will want to see what kind of reaction the chimps will have. Then move farther on around the zoo and see the elephants, horses and tigers get their cool treats and watch them have fun.
These types of specialized enrichment activities help the animals stay cool and comfortable in the hot months. Animal Enrichment is the process of introducing new things to an animal’s surroundings and environment. This enrichment provides mental and physical stimulation to the animal which in turn encourages more natural and healthy behavior. The Summer Enrichment program “Beat the Heat” is another opportunity for the public to visit their favorite animals enjoying their cool treats. Take time to visit the Overlook Café and see the Enrichment table and you will be able to ask questions about the items and find out what enrichment is all about.
While visiting the zoo, we want you to enjoy your visit as well. We recommend that you wear light colored clothing and drink plenty of liquids. As you stroll through the Zoo stop and have a cool spray of water under the misters or take a cool pedal boat ride on the Zoo’s lake. You can also take a break under the vast canopy of trees throughout the zoo, watching the animals while resting and cooling in the shade. Guests may also stroll through the air conditioned comfort of the Mann Museum. The entrance is conveniently located at the chimpanzee exhibit and is perfectly situated to cool you off half way through your zoo journey.
