Food and Travel Writers Visit for a Taste of Montgomery

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Several of Montgomery’s top restaurants and attractions will see special guests throughout the week as seven food and travel writers from across the U.S. visit Montgomery. A joint collaboration between the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce Convention & Visitor Bureau and the Alabama Tourism Department to celebrate the “Year of Alabama Food,” the three-day media trip will showcase Alabama’s reemerging capital city as a vibrant, affordable destination for travelers and food enthusiasts alike. From guided tours at historical attractions including the Rosa Parks Museum and Alabama State Capitol, to an evening at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and progressive dinner through some of the capital city’s most celebrated eateries, the packed itinerary offers a wide array of experiences and is sure to leave writers hungry for more.

This is the first press tour the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce Convention & Visitor Bureau has hosted since the launch of the new “Capital COOL” campaign in May to celebrate the growing impact of tourism and showcase Montgomery as a cool place to visit, and to live. Tourism already generates significant impact in the capital city, and the Chamber is betting that its cool new marketing campaign will heat up the local economy. In 2011, tourism and travel-related expenditures represented more than $566 million in Montgomery, according to the Alabama Tourism Department, with 10,500 jobs and $241 million in annual wages. Tourism/travel is one of the healthiest sectors of the US economy in terms of job creation, generating $1.9 trillion in economic output in the US last year.
