Search Begins For Best Cooks On The Coosa
The Elmore County Community Foundation is looking for the best cooks on the Coosa, or perhaps the best in Alabama. The foundation will hold its second annual “Cookin’ On The Coosa” barbeque cook-off Saturday, July 21, in Wetumpka in conjunction with Wetumpka‘s Coosa River Music & Arts Festival. Both professional and backyard cooking teams will compete in up to three categories: chicken, pork and ribs, with the overall winner in each division to be determined by total points in all categories. The overall grand champion team will take home a cash prize and bragging rights as the “Best Cooks On The Coosa”. The overall reserve champion and the top three teams in each category will also be recognized. Teams will be set up in the area behind the City Administration building next to the Civic Center on Main Street in Wetumpka. Wristbands are available to the public for $10 per person to sample the entries, with gates opening at 5 p.m.
Last year’s cook-off raised over $12,000 with twenty cooking teams from across the state competing according to Burton Ward, president of the Central Alabama Community Foundation of which ECCF is an affiliate. All proceeds from this year’s event will be returned to Elmore County through Elmore County Community Foundation’s 2013 Community Grants. ECCF’s annual grants program offers nonprofits serving Elmore County an opportunity to apply for program support in the areas of education, health and human services, historic preservation and cultural arts. The foundation has distributed more than $2.3 million dollars in grants and scholarships benefiting Elmore County residents since 1998.
