Petition Seeks to Disqualify Democratic Chief Justice Nominee

Alabama Democratic Party Chairman Mark Kennedy says he’s seriously considering a petition that asks him to disqualify the party’s nominee for chief justice, Harry Lyon.

Huntsville Democrat Sherry Broyles sent the party a petition Tuesday saying Lyon should be disqualified because he hasn’t filed any reports saying how much he has raised and spent on his campaign.

Lyon says he hasn’t raised enough to require him to file. But Broyles says the filing requirements were changed for the 2012 elections to require Lyon to file monthly reports.

Kennedy says the party will review the allegations in a timely manner.

Lyon is an attorney from Pelham in suburban Birmingham. He faces Republican Roy Moore in the general election Nov. 6.
