Surprise! Ex-UGA commit Derrick Henry to attend ‘Dawg Night’

UGA got some good news about Derrick Henry, the 5-star tailback who de-committed from the Bulldogs recently after visiting his new favorite school, Alabama.

Henry announced on Twitter that he will be attending “Dawg Night” prospect camp on Friday.

A few days ago at Nike’s The Opening all-star camp, Henry confirmed again that Alabama is his leader, with UGA as the runner-up. The 6-foot-3, 240-pounder from Yulee, Fla., will make his final college decision in December, and then enroll early in college the following month.

Despite the fact that UGA still trails Alabama, Henry’s appearance at “Dawg Night” can’t be anything but good news for the Bulldogs.

It was at last year’s “Dawg Night” that Henry made his surprising commitment.

After de-committing from UGA last month, some speculated that Henry would’ve committed to Alabama by now, or at least focus his sole attention on the Crimson Tide. There were some doubts that Henry would even show up on UGA’s campus again after the change of heart.

But Henry said he will be at “Dawg Night” – giving UGA’s coaches a prime opportunity to court him again.

“It gives Georgia a chance to get one of the top running back prospects on campus, and around several other of the Georgia commitments he has grown close to over the past year,” ESPN’s Kipp Adams said. “It was in that same situation that he decided to commit last year at Dawg Night.

“Henry has grown close to guys like [UGA commits] Tray Matthews, Brice Ramsey and Tramel Terry. It keeps the Bulldogs in the race. Obviously, Alabama is going to be difficult to beat because they really impressed him when he visited, and gave him enough to think to de-commit [from UGA] and name Alabama as his leader. But adding him to [Alabama’s] commitment class at this point would be a premature.

“There’s still 5-6 months to go before Derrick enrolls early. I would never count any school out in recruiting. Getting a prospect on campus is immeasurable, as far as what impact it could have on their decision.”

Said 247Sports’ Rusty Mansell, “I think it’s a pretty big deal for Georgia — to get him up there, and get him around guys like Brice Ramsey, Tramel Terry and all those guys. He’s an early enrollee, so there’s only so many times he’s going to be able to visit before he makes his final decision. Any time that Georgia gets Derrick Henry on campus, that’s a plus for them.”

With three Grayson teammates headed to Clemson, Nkemdiche told the New York Times he also wanted the Tigers to offer Ryan Carter. “I was like, ‘Man, I’ve got to get you up there,’” Nkemdiche told the Times. “‘I can’t leave you out.’”

Robert Nkemdiche’s efforts to help his friends and high school teammates with colleges were examined in this story by the New York Times. “[Robert] wants to help as many people as he can,” said Stephanie Schuessler, mother of QB Nick Schuessler (who is transferring from Mississippi State to Clemson). “It’s not like Rob’s talking about kids who would never be looked at otherwise. He’s not getting a water boy out there on a full ride.”

The Times also wrote that after Nkemdiche and three of his Grayson teammates were headed to Clemson, Nkemdiche also “wanted the Tigers to offer a scholarship” to his close friend and teammate Ryan Carter. “I was like, ‘Man, I’ve got to get you up there,’” Nkemdiche told the Times. “‘I can’t leave you out.’”
